Embodied Carbon Leader, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM)
Mirko, Embodied Carbon Leader for the architectural, urban planning and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), is an experienced Sustainability Specialist, BREEAM-AP and fully qualified Architect with over 16 years’ experience within the construction industry. He advises clients on Whole Life Net-Zero Carbon design optimisation strategies. He reviews design and construction stages of projects and he provides consultancy in Regenerative design by integrating Embodied Carbon, Operational Carbon and Circular Economy principles. He sits on the LETI (London Energy Transformation Initiative) Steering Group, and was the lead author of the LETI publication ‘Embodied Carbon Primer’. He is a guest lecturer at the University of Bath in Embodied Carbon and at the Atlantic Technological University in Circular Economy. Whilst working for the BRE (Building Research Establishment) Group, Mirko was the Life Cycle Assessment technical lead and creator of the methodology for the Environmental Evaluation module of the Circular Building Assessment (CBA) part of the EU Horizon 2020 - Building as Material Banks (BAMB 2020) research project, which objectives were to enable a Circular Economy approach in the construction industry. He was also the co-author of the Case Study 2 Whole Life Carbon – Curtain Walling part of the book ‘Targeting Zero’, RIBA Publishing 2017.
